1. I believe that opportunity for improvement exists in the standard T-shirt. This improvement would be the ability for a shirt to not hold on to sweat for as long as it does, if at all.
2. The unmet need is that people who walk from place to place outside are often left with a shirt that is stuck to their back once they have arrived at their destination. This need is for all people who live in a hot area and do not want their shirt to be stuck to them as they enter an air conditioned building. This need has been around for quite some time but still exists even with current technological advances. Currently, most people just do there best to keep themselves out of the sun so that they do not sweat enough for the problem to occur. I would say there is a 66% chance that this opportunity exists.
3a. David Keuhn is a student here at UF who has to walk long distance to get to class. He would benefit from this opportunity as he would no longer have to deal with the sweat building up in his shirt.
4a. It is a Florida problem, not much we could do to affect the temperature. It affects him always during the summer, but necessarily if it is the morning. It became most evident in high school where passageways were outside. He tries to bike as it keeps him out of the sun but he has to exert more energy which may also make him sweat. He wishes there was a better solution but not exactly sure there is one.
3b. Andrew Tumlin goes to UF and has to walk long distances to get to class. As a resident of Florida, he has to deal with almost eveyday being hot and having his feet as his main form of transportation.
4b. The sweat makes you feel sticky and unclean because of the mugginess. He noticed this annoyance in middle school and says it affects him sometimes depending on the weather. To avoid this problem he tries to walk in the shade to stay out of direct sunlight for extended periods of time. Also wishes there was another solution but believes it is not feasible to fix said problem.
3c. Hayden Clum attends the University of Florida and generally walks from place to place. Since he has to deal with the Florida heat, he would be the prototypical customer.
4c. A combination of this being Florida and also chairs being made of a material that does not help the problem. His first encounter with this need was day one of high school when there were outside passageways. He carries a lighter backpack load to keep weight as less of a problem and not leaning back in the chair. He would prefer that there would be a better solution as this only alleviates the symptoms.
5. It seems people may focus more on ways to stay out of the sun as opposed to a shirt that is less likely to absorb sweat. A special material of shirt was never mentioned which makes me believe that this opportunity could also be a creative solution to the problem. It surprised me that they had only started dealing with this problem in middle and high school and not before then.
Summary
I would say that my opportunity definitely still exists. Even though none of them suggested my idea as a solution, they all still agreed that there was a problem and wished for a better solution. I now feel there may be tweaks to my idea that involve a material that reacts to the temperature becoming colder and expelling sweat. I believe that listening to potential customers concerns is very important. A problem always has a wide variety of aspects to cover and any advice to see them all should be taken into account. When it comes down to it though, an entrepreneur should now what is best for themselves and keep their idea true to their beliefs.
Hey David,
ReplyDeleteThis is a cool idea you came up with, I'm interested to see if you'll run with this one through your hypotheses and throughout the course. It seems very applicable to college students in Florida, an easy demographic for this course. I know I certainly would love a shirt that doesn't take in sweat... I swear everyday when I'm walking my back gets soaked against my backpack giving the nastiest feeling. Good luck with expending this idea!
