David Nelson's Entrepreneurship Story

The biggest exposure to entrepreneurship is definitely my dad. As a background, my dad has been working in the wine industry for the majority of his life. He specialized in sales and was in charge of distributors in the south east. At the moment though, he has turned his eyes on taking advantage of the current champagne market. As it stands, the most commonly consumed (and most well-known) sparkling wine is champagne. There are many other sparkling wines, but none are stocked throughout America nearly as much as Champagne. This situation was also true with another alcoholic beverage, Jager. Jager was barely known in America and there was little interest for it. One single entrepreneur saw that it could do well in America with some marketing and an increase in availability in cities. My father intends to follow this idea with a sparkling wine from southern Spain that tastes just as good, if not better, than Champagne. He believes this replacement will work well as it can be marketed as a competing sparkling wine but sold at a lower price.

I joined ENT 3003 for a few reasons. Admittedly, my first reason was I needed more 3000-4000 business elective credits for my major. However, I could have picked many classes to fill this requirement. I was specifically drawn to this class as I believed learning about entrepreneurship from an experienced professor could be quite beneficial for me as a business student. Lastly, I joined this class because I prefer online classes as it gives me a good amount of flexibility in my schedule.

I hope to get a new level of appreciation for entrepreneurs out of this class.

  1. David, I really enjoyed reading your entrepreneurship story about your dad. My story was similar because my aunt was working at a job different than what she really wanted to do but ultimately put her passion first and pursued the dream, as I can see that your dad wanted to do as well! I also was similar with you about one of the reasons why I took entrepreneurship for the benefits to being a business student! Great post!

  2. Hey David!
I am truly grad that you are interested in Champagne. Actually, I am an exchange student from South Korea and I am really fond of drinking Champagne. However, most of American people do not usually drink Champagne unless it is a special occasion unfortunately.
So, I am trying to persuade people to drink Champagne with me when I have chances lol. Whenever I go to the Publix to buy some groceries, I just buy Champagne because I want to be prepared to drink Champagne when I have chances lol.

  3. Hi David, I find it great that your dad is taking advantage of what could be a lucrative industry. Champagne is constantly used for any adult occasion and having it at an affordable price is even better. I also had the same reason for taking this class because I was low on credits, but I truly believe we all can benefit from this course.
